WHAT WE DO
The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high-quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.
The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Under close direction, the driver will provide safe, reliable and timely transport for the High Commissioner (HOM), Australian High Commission (AHC) staff, visitors and officials. The driver will make deliveries/collections, perform routine vehicle maintenance, property and administrative activities.
The key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:
- Drive the HOM, AHC staff, visitors and officials between locations and assist with luggage
- Ensure transportation service operates in accordance with DFAT and local policies, procedures, and processes for use of official fleet vehicles
- Ensure compliance with AHC security instructions and measures for driving and safety of passengers
- Maintain up to date and accurate fleet vehicle records including logbooks, petrol purchases, maintenance records and registration renewals. Advise on maintenance of vehicles
- Liaise with contractors, suppliers, and local authorities to facilitate registrations, stickers and other fleet requirements​
- Ensure AHC vehicle fleet and equipment is managed and maintained in accordance with DFAT policies and guidelines including by performing routine checks of official vehicles (e.g. water levels, battery, tyres, fuel, oil, first aid kit, umbrellas and fans)
- Inform the SAO when service/maintenance work is required
- Wash and clean fleet vehicles and keep fleet vehicles tidy on an ongoing basis,
- Ensure that fleet vehicles, keys, and equipment are kept in secure location.
- Assist incoming Australian based staff with obtaining driver licences and car registrations
- Maintain a database of all DC plated cars in Teams – TPN requests, dates of renews and ownership changes
- Drive fuel trailer and assist refuelling power generators at Australian Government properties
- Record, distribute and deliver mail, including diplomatic mail and other items, as required
- Perform general office duties and assist with receipt, dispatch, transfer and handling of stores including furniture and fittings (this will involve some lifting and carrying of heavy objects).
- Assist to prepare transport programs for high level visits to Samoa
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Demonstrated ability to drive a motor vehicle (manual and automatic) safely and efficiently.
- Must hold a current Class B & E driver licence with no convictions
- Sound knowledge of Samoa and American Samoa transport routes
- Demonstrated ability to carry out duties with a high degree of discretion and integrity.
- Ability to carry out manual duties relating to operational requirements of motor vehicles, transport of goods within and outside of the Mission and minor property maintenance works.
- Ability to accept responsibility, display creative initiative and work as part of a team
- Sound computer skills and a degree of proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and Teams
- Good verbal and written English communication skills
- First Aid certificate (desirable)
- Availability to work outside regular office hours on a versatile basis and at short notice
- Be available to travel to Savaii and American Samoa during HOM visits
- A minimum of 3-years driving experience in Samoa
